Summary Report


Conference Theme: "Knowledge and Skills - Creating Values beyond Borders".

The North American Regional Conference was the first ever Regional Conference in the PAN IIT system. With over 450 attendees, this one and one half day Conference on 24, 25 June 2006 in Toronto/Mississauga, Canada attracted IITians as major participants primarily from Canada, USA and a few from India, Sweden and Japan too. PAN-IIT, USA (www.iit.org) was our main partner.

·         Opening Ceremony & Keynote Speaker

·         Plenary Sessions:

o   Beyond Borders – The Global Business Environment

o   Luncheon Speaker and Keynote Session

o   Academic & Research Council Panel Discussions

o   Universities Forum: Canada – USA – IITs Academic Exchanges

o   Conference Banquet Dinner & Keynote Speaker

o   CEO Forum Corporate Strategy: Technology, New Markets


The plenary sessions featured 30 prominent invited speakers, and to name a few:

o   H E Shyamala Cowsik – High Commissioner of India to Canada

o   H W Hazel McCallion – Mayor of Mississauga

o   Rajat Gupta – Chair, PAN IIT, Managing Partner McKinsey & Company, USA.

o   Hon. Harinder Takhar – Minister of Small Business & Entrepreneurship, Government of Ontario

o   Beheruz Sethna – Interim Senior Vice Chancellor, University System of Georgia, USA

o   Padmasree Warrior – EVP & CTO, Motorola, USA

o   Surya Kant – President, North America Operations, Tata Consultancy Services, USA.

o   Hari Pandey – CEO, ICICI Bank

o   P S Rana – Chairman & MD, Housing & Urban Development Corporation, New Delhi, India

o   Sudhakar Shenoy – Chairman & CEO, IMC, USA.

o   Rajesh Subramaniam – President FEDEX, Canada

o   Satish Mehta – Consul General, Consulate of India, Toronto.

o   University Presidents and Vice Presidents


·         Concurrent Tracks: There were a total of 10 concurrent tracks featuring 55 speakers and presenters of papers. Some prominent speakers are as follows:

o   Srikumar Banerjee – Director, BARC, Mumbai, India

o   Cecile Cleroux, Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment Canada

o   Lars Henricksson, Honorary Consul for Sweden in Ontario


Conclusions:

·         On the basis of feedback received and still being received the conference was a remarkable success. Some of the positive outcomes were as follows:

·         Presence of University Presidents, Vice Presidents and others from the academia helped to establish the prestige of IITs in Canada.

·         Several Canadian Universities are actively seeking collaborations with IITs.

·         Presence of CEOs in the CEO forum and entrepreneurs provide an excellent opportunity to learn from their experiences.

·         Improved visibility to Universities, government and industry due to participation as speakers, sponsors, guests.

·         Presence of non-IITians has helped them to know what IITians are all about and they have automatically become spokespersons for IITs when they speak about the conference.

·         Generate employment opportunities for IITians as preferred candidates.

·         A very significant outcome is the opportunities to network and build relationships.

·         Federal and Provincial Government departments have been seeking to connect with IITs.


Future Direction:

·         Invest in sustainable activities for long term benefit and growth. Some suggestions are as follows:

·         Pursue accreditation of IIT degrees in Canada.

·         Install programs for enhancing entrepreneurship amongst IITians, for example having angel mentors.

·         Improve networking by having special speaker series, industry visits as part of IITAC activities.
